Of course learning the alphabet is merely the first step. To learn to read and speak simple words and sentences it is better to have a teacher who will explain the rules and the differences in sounds between had an soft positions and the details of stress on words. It is not as difficult as it seems. I would recommend a course of 5 lessons during which you will learn to read Russian, learn the basic phonetic rules and see how nouns, prespositions and verbs look in Russian. You will learn over 2 dozen of the most important speech patterns and up to 500 Russian words.
For all who would like to learn to write in Russian I recommend that you get acquainted with the hand-written letters in Russian.
